11/19/2021 Daily Devotion – Let’s not over-complicate things!

“Give ear and come to me; hear me, that your soul may live. I will make an everlasting covenant with you, my faithful love promised to David.” (Isaiah 55:3, NIV)

As I have been doing devotions through the book of Isaiah, something has become very clear to me. I am guilty of complicating my Christian faith and God’s relationship with me. I transfer my confusion about this world into my relationship with God. In this world everything is difficult and complicated. People and things don’t always act or respond the way we would have wanted. As we look around at our world we are left with more questions than answers. This is what I think I transfer into my relationship with God. I see all these question marks and uncertainties. But why?

God makes His message very clear in the first three verses of Isaiah. The entire book of Isaiah is about how God is going to be faithful to His eternal covenant even while Israel goes through some tough times. Look at the verse above, “Give ear and come to Me, that your soul may live.” God wants us simply to listen and to rely upon His Word. What I hear Him telling me is, “Tom, stop getting yourself in the way of listening to me!” The Lord wants me to shut up and listen. This may sound hard, but it is good news. When we get out of the way and stop and listen to what God has to say it is exactly what we need to hear. It is life for our souls. It is a reminder that we have been brought into His eternal covenant because He loves us.

Today, let’s not over-complicate our Christian life. Let’s just stop for a moment and listen. Listen to the Lord of the universe tell you how much He loves you.

Peace!
