“He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. For by him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things were created by him and for him. He is before all things, and in him all things hold together.” –Colossians — 1:15–17 (NIV)
For us Christians, who adhere to the doctrine of the Trinity, this is just one of those verses that tells us that Jesus is not only a man but that He is also God. Compare these words with those found in the Gospel of John 1:1-3: “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. Through Him all things were made; without Him nothing was made that has been made.” Core to our understanding of God is that He is one in essence, but three in person. The Jesus whom we adore as a baby on Christmas morning is also the second person of the Trinity who has been in existence for all eternity. By His word and creative touch He created all things into existence. They were not only created by Him, but they were also created for Him. All of creation testifies of His great glory.
I would also like to make mention of the last few words of the verses above, “and in Him all things hold together.” I believe that this statement refers to more than just our physical creation. The verses above say that Jesus created that which is visible and invisible. He (Jesus) holds all things together! Here is a short list of things that I believe Jesus holds together and that I would like you to consider: our occupation, our physical and psychological health, our family, our marriage, our church, our community, our government. I think you get my point. If He holds everything together, then there is nothing that He leaves for us to hold together. Also, if anything is falling apart in our lives, then we must consider that we are not allowing Him the control of those areas of our life.
Let’s ponder today the depth of what this statement means, “and in Him all things hold together.”
Peace!
