03/01/22 Daily Devotion – Discernment comes from the Holy Spirit!

I am your servant; give me discernment that I may understand your statutes. — Psalm 119:125 (NIV)

Paul says in 1 Corinthians, “The man without the Spirit does not accept the things that come from the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him, and he cannot understand them, because they are spiritually discerned” (1 Corinthians 2:14, NIV). The psalmist and Paul are telling us that God’s Word is spiritually discerned. Paul goes further to say that a man without the Spirit can’t accept and understand God’s truths because they are foolishness to him. The Bible is exceedingly more powerful than any book on the planet because it carries within itself a power to create faith and transform hearts and minds.

As we read and study the Bible we need to make sure that we allow the Word to speak to us rather than us speaking to the Word. As I said in a past devotion, God’s Word is to be our master and not the other way around. We need to pray, as the psalmist does, for God to provide us a discerning heart to understand His truths. As we gain the discernment that only the Holy Spirit can provide, we can better understand what God’s Word is saying to our lives. The more discerning we are, the brighter the Word of God is to our path. The brighter God’s Word is to our path, the more confidently we can walk.

I pray that today and always we seek the Spirit’s discernment as we turn to God’s Word for guidance and direction.

Peace!
