“Hear my voice in accordance with your love; preserve my life, O Lord, according to your laws.” — Psalm 119:149 (NIV)

Look at the psalmist’s use of the words “accordance” and “according” in this verse. I find it fascinating and comforting to know that important concepts like God’s love and His providence over my life are not left to whim or chance. God has placed in His eternal Word that He loves us and desires to preserve us and provide for our existence. God’s love, emotion, and compassion do not waiver like yours and mine. He has been loving and compassionate for all eternity. It is His nature and character to love us no matter what.

So the psalmist confidently uses the word “according” to describe the certainty of God’s love. What he is reminding himself of, and saying to us, is that God will always act in accordance with His Word. Because God’s Word says that He loves us and provides for us, we and the psalmist can be assured that God will be true to His Word and act accordingly. Because He loves us, He will hear our voice when we pray. He will rise to meet the needs of our petitions according to His love and desire to preserve our lives.

Be certain today that God always has and always will act according to His Word. His Word is eternally true!
