I would like to start a number of devotions on the topic of truth. We live in a society that wrestles with what truth is, or if there even is such a thing. We hear people say that there are no absolutes, and that each of us has a right to his own truth. If each of us can have our own truth, then is it really truth? Isn’t it just opinion? I will leave that thought for a later devotion.

Today we look at truth in the mouth of God Himself. The scene is Moses wanting to see God face-to-face, but God said it would have to be done a different way. He tucked Moses into the cleft of a mountain and passed by Moses so he would be able to see His glory. As He passed by Moses, the Lord proclaimed, “The Lord, the Lord, compassionate and gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in lovingkindness and truth.” The Lord, having the opportunity to describe Himself to Moses, described Himself as “abounding in truth.” I also quote above the NIV translation, which uses the word faithfulness. Truth and faithfulness go hand in hand. What is there to be faithful to if there is no truth? It is truth that one puts faith in. It is truth that people are willing to dedicate their lives upon, and some even to die for.

We have a God of truth, and He is faithful to those truths. One of those truths was that one day He would send a Savior who would crush the Devil’s head (the Devil is the opposite of truth). God sent His own Son into the world to die for our sins and to defeat the Devil. This Savior, Jesus, even said of Himself, “I am the Way, and the Truth, and the Life.”
