“Why do you call me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ and do not do what I say?” (Luke 6:46 NIV84)

You know, I think I should be exempt from God’s Word catching me by surprise and hitting me in the head like a 2-by-4. Why? Because I am the devotion guy. Shouldn’t I have this all pulled together? Not! Even pastors and Bible teachers have to face the raw truths of God’s Word.

The verse above is just before a familiar section where Jesus talks about two types of builders. Those who build sturdy foundations are like those who listen to God’s Word and put its truths into practice. They prepare themselves for the storms of this world by protecting themselves with God’s truths. The other type of builder just throws his house together without a solid foundation. Jesus says he is like the man who hears God’s Word but doesn’t put it into practice. When the storm comes, it will completely wipe him out.

The key to the parable and the question in this verse is putting Jesus’ words into practice. Jesus is asking why we call Him “Lord” but don’t listen to what He says? I am forced to ask Jesus’ question of my own life. Do I go to church, and even teach Bible studies, and not do what He says? After some serious reflection and soul searching, I have to admit that I am guilty of calling Him Lord but not doing what my Lord wants me to do. In these instances my life is missing the crucial foundation to provide stability. What is it about me that refuses to follow through on what I know is true? I have to admit that although I know Jesus’ truths, I often choose to listen to the voices of this world.
