10/24/23 Daily Devotion – Always remember who gets the credit!

“Celebrate the Feast of Unleavened Bread, because it was on this very day that I brought your divisions out of Egypt. Celebrate this day as a lasting ordinance for the generations to come.” (Exodus 12:17 NIV84)

The Passover was to be a lasting ordinance for the people of God. Forever, they were to glorify and praise God for His act of mercy and grace in redeeming them from their enslavement in Egypt. They were to always remember that God was the One who brought their divisions out of Egypt. This might seem obvious to us as we read this section of Exodus. I mean, really, how could they ever forget this amazing act of grace? How could they ever forget the amazing plagues, the walking across the Red Sea on dry ground? How could they ever forget what God had done? But they did! They got to the promised land and forgot that God was in the center of all they had experienced. They participated in the passover every year, but it lost its true meaning. It quickly became religious ritual. God was no longer at the center of it. Even their religious life began to center around them as the worshipers, instead of around God, the One who ought to have been worshiped.

My biggest fear for 21st-century Christianity is that we commit the same grave error. I think many Christians today have made Christianity in their own image. We have watered down the Word of God. In an attempt to bring Christianity down to the lowest common denominator, I think some have lost Christianity itself. Our faith and our message seems to be more about ourselves than about our Redeemer and Savior. We need to make things right again. We need to keep God at the center of all that we do. Our faith, worship, life and practices must be Christ-centered. Like Paul, our motto ought to be, “I determine to know nothing among you except Jesus Christ and Him crucified” (1 Corinthians 2:2).  Jesus’ death and resurrection is the basis for our worship on Sunday morning. He alone gets credit, glory and praise!

Peace!
