Jesus sent Peter and John, saying, “Go and make preparations for us to eat the Passover.” “Where do you want us to prepare for it?” they asked. He replied, “As you enter the city, a man carrying a jar of water will meet you. Follow him to the house that he enters, and say to the owner of the house, ‘The Teacher asks: Where is the guest room, where I may eat the Passover with my disciples?’ He will show you a large upper room, all furnished. Make preparations there.” They left and found things just as Jesus had told them. So they prepared the Passover. (Luke 22:8–13, NIV84)
It was Thursday evening. Jesus was hours away from His arrest in the garden of Gethsemane. A disciple was contemplating a betrayal, and religious leaders were conspiring. And what was Jesus’ focus? He wanted Peter and John to make preparations for them all to eat the Passover meal. Just like the entire last week of Jesus’ life, He revealed once again that He was in absolute control. He told Peter and John to go into town and that a man carrying a jar of water would meet them. He told them to follow that man to the house he served in and talk to the owner of the house. They were told to say to the owner, “The Teacher asks: Where is the guest room where I may eat the Passover with my disciples?” And what happened? The owner took them upstairs to a room already furnished.
We must draw comfort from events like this. We must remember that Jesus is no ordinary man. He is not only a Savior who can relate to our human condition and earthly consequences, but He is also the Lord of the universe who has the power to influence and alter those conditions and consequences. When things seem out of control to us, they never are to Him. When things seem hopeless and meaningless to us, He sees a design that is connected to a master plan. Is there something going on in your life today that you are holding onto and trying to control on your own? Are you finding it difficult to see any purpose in what it is you are experiencing, or have you lost sight of the way out? Turn to Jesus! Our Lord and Savior alone can bring purpose and meaning to the dark times in our lives. He alone can rescue us from what seems to be the end.
Let’s let Jesus guide and govern our lives!
Peace!
