“When they came up out of the water, the Spirit of the Lord suddenly took Philip away, and the eunuch did not see him again, but went on his way rejoicing. Philip, however, appeared at Azotus and traveled about, preaching the gospel in all the towns until he reached Caesarea.” (Acts 8:39–40, NIV84)
Our God will do just about anything when it comes to the things most important to Him. He executed 10 plagues upon Egypt after 430 years in order to fulfill His promise to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. His prophets performed miraculous signs in order to get the attention of His people. In order to save humanity, He sent His very own Son into the world as a man so that He might be our substitute both in life and in death. Jesus lived the perfect life that none of us could live and died as the spotless lamb bearing our sins upon Himself as though He committed them. God the Father raised His son from the dead so that we might be assured salvation.
So, what purpose might there be in sending Philip away from a thriving ministry to a desert road? And what importance could there be in Philip’s sharing the Gospel message with an Ethiopian traveling back to Africa? Well, church history records that this Ethiopian was so powerfully touched by the message of Jesus Christ that once He got home he spread the message to everyone He could. He is credited for creating the first Christian church in Africa. God can take what seems to us to be a simple thing and make it significantly important. So, let’s not take for granted our faith in Jesus Christ. Take a look at the world around you and believe that there are people in your life God wants you to touch because He has great plans for them.
Peace!
