“Woe to the one who quarrels with his Maker— An earthenware vessel among the vessels of earth! Will the clay say to the potter, ‘What are you doing?’ Or the thing you are making say, ‘He has no hands’? ” (Isaiah 45:9, NASB95)

For the third time now, the Lord, through the prophet Isaiah, warned the children of Israel that it was illogical and futile for them to look back at their Creator (Potter) and say, “What are you doing?…He has no hands.” To understand the full meaning of this verse we have to understand the context in which it was written. The children of Israel were forced into captivity and had been taken from their land. I am sure many of them were seeing the Lord as impotent to help and save them.  They wrongly began to accuse God of not knowing what He was doing.  Because if He knew what He was doing, He would have never let them become captives.

Have you ever had a time in your life when nothing was happening like you thought it ought to have happened?  Maybe you are in one of those times right now.  Do you find yourself blaming God for your current situation?  Are you charging Him with not being able to see and deal with your needs?  Like the children of Israel, we need to realize that we are NOT God.  He alone sees the bigger picture.  He has no desire to make us suffer but will use our suffering to bring us closer to Him.  He promises that He has a plan for us that will give us hope and a future (Jer.29:11).

Today, let’s start by letting God be God and letting ourselves be the clay.  Let’s trust that even in our darkest hour He knows and understands what we are going through and will work to meet our needs.
