“Come, all you who are thirsty, come to the waters; and you who have no money, come, buy and eat! Come, buy wine and milk without money and without cost. Why spend money on what is not bread, and your labor on what does not satisfy? Listen, listen to me, and eat what is good, and your soul will delight in the richest of fare.” (Isaiah 55:1–2, NIV)
I just absolutely love this section of Scripture. When I read it, I hear Jesus saying, “Come to me all who are weary and heavy laden and I will give you rest.” It is so wonderful to know that God is the source of everything that is good. He offers grace, forgiveness, hope, truth, wisdom, direction, love, peace; and He offers it all to us for FREE. “Come buy wine and milk without money and without cost.” It is absolutely free. The invitation is to “Come, all you who are thirsty.”
Are you thirsty? Are you exhausted from trying to get the things you need from this world? Have you ever noticed that this world never offers anything free? There are always strings attached. But not with God. From the moment He created you and brought you into this world His blessings have been free. So if God is the source of all that is good, and He offers it all to me free, then why am I so often in need? Why do I seem to lack the very things God offers for free? The answer to this question hurts! It is because my sinfulness gets in the way. I either refuse to heed the call to “come”, or I doubt that He is really willing and able to provide me those things. How foolish! But this is what sin does, and this is what the Devil does when He creates lies and deception about God’s goodness.
We need to repent of our sinfulness. We need to tell Satan to get out of our way. We need to turn to the cross of Jesus and know that what God says in these verses through Isaiah is TRUE. He is the giver of all that is good, and He gives it all absolutely free.
Peace!
