01/09/22 Daily Devotion – We are the clay, not the Potter!

“Yet, O Lord, you are our Father. We are the clay, you are the potter; we are all the work of your hand.” — Isaiah 64:8 (NIV)

There are 66 chapters in the book of Isaiah, and we are in the 64th chapter. In this 64th chapter we come across some really good news. They finally got it. The children of Israel, through the Lord’s discipline, finally opened their eyes and realized that they ARE the clay and that God IS the Potter. God has moved people and nations according to His will, and His people finally understood. You see, in earlier chapters the Lord said that His people were rejecting him. “The pot was saying to the potter, you did not make me” (Isaiah 29:16). But not now! Now you hear the children of God saying, “We are the clay …. we are the works of Your hands.”

If there is a point that needs to be driven home to us and to our society, it is that we are not autonomous beings. We did not bring ourselves into existence, and we will wander aimlessly in this life until we come to know our Maker and Redeemer. To know that we have a creator helps us begin to answer the huge questions of life. Where did I come from? Who am I? What is my purpose, meaning, value? The answers cannot be found by looking at the physical world around us. All you will find there is hopelessness and meaninglessness. Having a creator begins to provide us the definition and meaning we so fervently seek. Like the children of Israel, we are hopelessly lost until we come to terms with the God who created us, loves us, and redeems us.

Today, let yourself be the clay. Let the Lord do the defining, shaping, and molding. Trust Him! You are in good hands!
