“I gave you milk, not solid food, for you were not yet ready for it. Indeed, you are still not ready. You are still worldly. For since there is jealousy and quarreling among you, are you not worldly? Are you not acting like mere humans?” (1 Corinthians 3:2-3 NIV)
This section of 1 Corinthians should be difficult for all of us to hear. Paul was flat out telling the Corinthian Christian that their spiritual journey was going to plateau and that is would require a constant diet of spiritual milk like that of the immature Christian if they didn’t put their worldly ways behind them. The Corinthian Christians were quarreling and bickering about “who’s who” in the kingdom rather than focusing on the King of the kingdom. They were trying to see kingdom realities with earthly eyes, and we have a tendency to do the same thing in our Christian lives and churches today. We tend to want to squeeze Christianity into our established worldview, instead of allowing for the wholesale change that is required. Paul is telling us that we will never mature in the faith if we are wanting it done on our terms.
We are not fallen humanity anymore. We are new creatures in Christ. We have been born again by the power of the Holy Spirit. Now, that very Spirit would like to take us to the next level. He wants to pull us farther and farther away from the perceptions and perspectives of this world toward the perspectives of God’s kingdom. But in order to get where we need to go, we must pull up stakes in our current worldview and practice and re-stake ourselves into the truths of God’s Word. We must let go of a perspective of the world that revolves around us and find a perspective that revolves around the teachings of Jesus Christ.
Let’s each decide today that it is time to move on to spiritual meat.
Peace!
