01/24/22 Daily Devotion – Lord, why am I like this?

“Since you died with Christ to the basic principles of this world, why, as though you still belonged to it, do you submit to its rules: ” (Colossians 2:20, NIV)

The heart and soul of Tom Donnelly doesn’t like this verse very much.  I cringe every time I read the words, “…why, as though you still belong to it…”.  I struggle with why there are still aspects of my life of which I do not want to give up control.  Although I know what God would have me do, I sometimes live with a foot in both kingdoms.  I do not want to give up certain aspects of my life.  Ultimately, I have to admit that I have not allowed that part of me to die with Christ.  I still hold onto “the basic principles of this world” in parts of my life.

Can you relate to what I am saying?  Are there parts of your life that are rooted in this world instead of eternity?  Satan has duped us into believing that we need to keep those areas alive and in our control.  He has convinced us that we will lose our identity and security if we die to those worldly aspects.  But what a liar he is!  We know that there is nothing in this world that is going to last.  We know that all of the principles we base our lives upon need to be rooted in Christ, or they are “hollow and deceptive”.

Let’s not treat Paul’s question above as rhetorical.  Let’s assume he expects an answer to his “why?”  Then join me in repenting and giving up the parts of our lives that are not rooted in Christ.

Peace!

Pastor Tom
