01/31/22 Daily Devotion – Are you Firmly Rooted?

“Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom, and as you sing psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs with gratitude in your hearts to God.” (Col. 3:16 NIV)

Paul’s appeal in this verse is for us to “let the word of Christ dwell in us richly.” Just like in the previous verse where he appeals to us to “let” the peace of God rule in our hearts, in this verse his appeal is the same. He wants us to make a proactive and intentional decision in the way we choose to use the Word of God. He wants us to make the commitment to be deeply rooted in the Word. He wants our meditation, education, teaching, admonishing, songs, and hymns to be deeply rooted in God’s Word.

In Deuteronomy chapter 6, Moses tells the children of Israel to live their lives in such a way that God’s Word is central in everything they do. “These commandments that I give you today are to be upon your hearts. Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. Tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads. Write them on the doorframes of your houses and on your gates. ” (Deuteronomy 6:6–9, NIV)

Paul’s encouragement to us today is the same. We need to be firmly rooted into God’s Word so that we filter everything we experience in this life through His Word. By doing so, we may gain the wisdom to understand what God may be doing and how we ought to speak and live in our daily lives.

May we each re-commit ourselves to be Firmly Rooted in God’s Word.

Peace!
