Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. (1 Corinthians 13:6 NIV84)
Love is not free flowing and whimsical, but is decisive and discerning. Love knows the difference between right and wrong, and evil and truth. Notice that Paul does not use falsehood and truth, which seem to be more appropriate opposites than evil and truth. He does this because in God’s eyes there are only two choices. He is love and truth, and all else is evil. It isn’t just wrong or false; it is evil. As Christians, love and truth resonate within us because God has placed both in our hearts and minds.
As we assent (believe) in a God of love, we assent to the truth that God brings to our lives. Yes, our lives! Love rejoices in a truth, not just believed in, but a truth that is lived out in love. As Christians, we are called to live lives of integrity that are seasoned with grace. We can never forget that there was a day when we did not live in God’s love and truth, but God pursued us with both and made us His children. We are called to be decisive and discerning about how love and truth are lived out in our lives.
And when we believe, live, and love in God’s truth, our hearts rejoice within that truth!
Peace!
