08/30/23 Daily Devotion – So that you might be rich!

“For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though he was rich, yet for your sake he became poor, so that you through his poverty might become rich.” (2 Corinthians 8:9 NIV84)

So, tell me, what does it mean to be rich? For most human beings in the West, we spend 90+% of our time trying to harness some type of monetary richness. I’m sure at some point in life you’ve joined me in the thought that, “If I only had X amount of money, a bigger house, a newer car, etc., etc., etc., then I would be…” What? Happy! Content! You see, it’s not richness (as in money) that our souls yearn for. It is happiness, fulfillment, joy, peace and contentment. We want to know who we are and why we are here, and what our purpose is, and finally, what our destiny is once we leave this place. If we only had answers to those questions, we would be the richest people alive.

God sent His Son from the throne of Heaven into this world in a state of humiliation in order that He might show us how to be truly rich. Jesus lived a perfect life. He taught the truth about who we are and what our purpose is, and how we ought to live, and what our final destiny is. It’s all there–just read the Gospels. Jesus died on a cross bearing our sins so that He might remove everything that is poor and destitute about us and take it upon Himself. Jesus shed His precious blood on the cross so that we might be rich. He lived, died and rose again so that we might be rich. He became impoverished and destitute so that we might become rich.

So, you see, this getting rich thing isn’t all that difficult. Just get to know Jesus and He will restore in you a purpose, and a meaning, and a destiny that will truly make you rich.

Peace!
