03/30/22 Daily Devotion – Even our worship must be in Spirit and Truth!

“God is spirit, and his worshipers must worship in spirit and in truth.” (John 4:24, NIV84)

We tend to think that truth can only be found and discussed in the empirical realm. If we can’t see it, touch it, or taste it, it can’t be seen as true. But is that true? Of course not! There are definitely truths in the realm of ideas that cannot be empirically proven. We govern our thinking and speaking by laws of logic that cannot be empirically verified. In our verse above, Jesus says that true worshipers of God must worship Him in spirit and in truth. This implies that there are truths in the spiritual realm, too.  It implies that we have a spiritual side to our existence. We must recognize that we have an eternal side of our life that is just as real as the temporal life we can see and touch.

So, how much attention are we giving to that spiritual side? Are we making sure that truth is the one constant we use on both sides of our existence? Just as much as we recognize the law of gravity in the physical world, we need to recognize and accept God’s truths in the spiritual side of our life. God created us and desires to redeem and transform our existence back to the way it was before the fall. Adam and Eve had a perfect balance and connectedness between their physical and spiritual lives.  To them, they were one thing. Because of sin, we live with these two realities more often divided than together.

As God touches us with His Holy Spirit through His Word, He begins to bring the two realities back to alignment. As we commit ourselves to God’s Word and prayer, we develop the spiritual sensitivity to re-align these two realms and begin to live and worship in spirit and in truth.

May we commit ourselves to daily bringing these two realities into alignment in our lives.

Peace!
