10/1/23 Daily Devotion – God will work His will, with or without us!

“‘Now go; I will help you speak and will teach you what to say.’ But Moses said, ‘O Lord, please send someone else to do it.’ Then the Lord’s anger burned against Moses and he said, ‘What about your brother, Aaron the Levite? I know he can speak well. He is already on his way to meet you, and his heart will be glad when he sees you. You shall speak to him and put words in his mouth; I will help both of you speak and will teach you what to do. He will speak to the people for you, and it will be as if he were your mouth and as if you were God to him.'” — Exodus 4:12-16 (NIV84)

God had assured Moses that He would be with him as he returned to Egypt. He promised that He, the creator of Moses’ mouth, would give him the words to speak, even though Moses was a weak speaker. So God finally told Moses, “Now go; I will help you speak and will teach you what to say.” This should have been enough! It ought to have been enough. But not for Moses. He said to God, “O Lord, please send someone else to do it.” Although being directed and commissioned by God, he refused to do what God wanted him to do. Read the next sentence carefully. “Then the Lord’s anger burned against Moses…” Moses was no longer offering God reasonable excuses. This time, He simply was telling the Lord “no.” Even the greatest men and women of faith have struggled with obedience to God. Moses wrestled with his calling and purpose, as many of us do. As God brought Moses’ brother Aaron into a leadership position, I see that God works His will either with us or without us. Hearing that his brother Aaron would join him in the mission, Moses withdrew his refusal and joined in the mission.

As Christians, we are called to faith and called to service in the body of Christ. There are no strings attached to our Christian faith. We have been made born again by the power of the Holy Spirit. Our salvation is as certain as Jesus’ death and resurrection. But our calling into the body of Christ is a bit different. God has gifted each of us to do particular things to further the work of the kingdom of God. Like Moses, we can provide God excuse after excuse, or we can simply tell Him no and not fulfill our role in the Body. I encourage you to rise up with the courage to hear God’s calling on your heart, to find the gift the Holy Spirit has given you for your work in His kingdom and the conviction to fulfill your role in the kingdom of God.

May we be open not only to hearing God’s will, but to fulfilling it.

Peace!

Pastor Tom
