04/23/22 Daily Devotion – Knowing truth isn’t as simple as 2+2=4!

So I will always remind you of these things, even though you know them and are firmly established in the truth you now have.” (2 Peter 1:12, NIV84)

I just love this thought from the apostle Peter. Even though we know the truth, and we are firmly rooted in it, we always need to be reminded of these things. Getting to know and understand the truth is not a one-time thing. It is not like learning that 2+2=4. That is a simple mathematical formula that once learned, simply gets applied. Learning, understanding, and applying concepts of truth are not so simple. There is one main reason that we need to be constantly reminded of truth — because it is constantly under attack. What should be as easy to adhere to as a simple mathematical formula gets mixed up in a sinful world full of wrong and false thinking. We need to be constantly reminded of the truth so that we can see the false ideas for what they are.

Let me explain this from the perspective of relationships. Biblical truth is not just tied to intellectual assent. It is tied to having a relationship with Jesus Christ (who is the Truth). We don’t just meet Jesus once and get it. We must be in constant contact with Jesus so that our relationship with Him grows, and our understanding of His truth is firmly rooted within us. Peter’s (our) reason for continually reminding ourselves of God’s truth is not to rhythmically indoctrinate the mind but to relationally persuade and engage the heart. Not that the mind is passive — it is not! But the mind alone is not enough. God wants all of us. He wants our mind, heart, and soul believing and living according to His truths.

May we never grow weary of being reminded of God’s truths.

Peace!
