10/15/23 Daily Devotion – Spiritual darkness is blinding!

“Pharaoh’s officials said to him, ‘How long will this man be a snare to us? Let the people go, so that they may worship the Lord their God. Do you not yet realize that Egypt is ruined?’” (Exodus 10:7 NIV84)

The Apostle Paul says in 1 Corinthians 2:14, “The natural man cannot accept the things of God because they are foolishness to him; he cannot understand them because they are spiritually appraised.” Paul was telling us that our spiritual condition is directly connected to our ability to see and understand reality (truth). Look at our verse for today. Pharaoh’s officials were no longer having fun trying to copy God’s plagues. Now they were broken beneath them. They were the ones who went to Pharaoh. Listen to what they said to him, “Do you not realize (see) that Egypt is in ruins?” They were begging Pharaoh to see reality, but in his hard-hearted state he refused to listen. His spiritual condition was not allowing him to see reality as it really was.

Ever thought about that in your life? In the life of your family, church, community, or country? You see, not all truths are mathematically calculated. Most of the truths we have to live by and make our daily decisions by are morally based. We have to decide whether a perception or action is right or wrong. The picture that Moses gives us of the Egyptians at this point in the plagues reveals how true this fact is. Like Pharaoh, we can become hard-hearted (spiritually blind) and fail to see the reality of our situation. Our spiritual condition blinds us to the reality that others see clearly. It behooves us as individuals, communities, and countries to examine our spiritual condition before we begin to declare truths about our current state or condition.

With truly repentant hearts, may our view of reality be guided by spiritual eyes that see truth as God sees it.
