“This is the one who came by water and blood — Jesus Christ. He did not come by water only, but by water and blood. And it is the Spirit who testifies, because the Spirit is the truth.” — 1 John 5:6 (NIV84)

In order to believe in the idea of absolute truth, one must comprehend and accept that there is an unchanging disseminator of that truth. Absolute truth would not descend upon a random and relativistic world. It could only descend upon an intentional and purposeful world. So, from where does truth come? It comes from outside ourselves. It comes from the unchanging God who created and sustains us. Truth has existed for eternity. It has always existed within the Godhead. Truth and wisdom are core characteristics of the God we love and worship. In the verse above, John wants us to be certain that although Jesus is no longer physically walking on this earth as the truth, the Holy Spirit continues that work.

The Holy Spirit works through the means of grace to continuously nourish us in the truth. Through all of our spiritual disciplines (e.g., studying the Word, prayer, communion, meditation) the Holy Spirit guides our hearts and minds with truth. The Spirit testifies to the truth because He, like Jesus, is the truth. As we live out our Christian lives we have the Spirit of truth residing in us. Paul often reminds us that we are temples of the Holy Spirit and that He dwells in us. The Holy Spirit’s task is to keep us in the truth. He keeps us connected to Jesus Christ. He provides us eyes of faith in an eyes-of-sight world.

Today, may we walk in and with the Spirit of truth.
