“A voice came from the cloud, saying, ‘This is my Son, whom I have chosen; listen to him.’” (Luke 9:35, NIV84)
Peter, James and John’s experience with Jesus on the Mount of Transfiguration was about to end. They had experienced the most amazing thing. They had seen Jesus glorified into His natural exalted state. They witnessed the fact that the dead don’t die, while watching Moses and Elijah talking with Jesus on that mountaintop. But who would have expected what was next? A voice from the clouds, God the Father, spoke: “This is my Son, whom I have chosen; listen to Him.” Like Moses on Mount Sinai, these three disciples had the rare opportunity to hear God speak audibly. They got to hear the voice of God!
And what is the message that God the Father delivered to the three disciples? “Listen to My Son!” The Father wanted the disciples, as He wants you and me, to listen to Jesus because He came to reveal the Father’s heart and to do His will. The Lord has provided us four Gospels and the writings of Apostles to provide us the teachings of Jesus. We need to be continuously in God’s Word so that we might listen to God’s Son. In Jesus we find the Father’s heart of compassion for the lost and broken. In Jesus we find hope for hopeless situations and peace for tumultuous times. Jesus tells us that He is the Way, and the Truth, and the Life! He tells us that no one can get to the Father unless they go through Him. We must listen to Jesus. We must follow Him to the cross and hear Him say, “Father, forgive them for they know not what they do” and “My God, My God, why have you forsaken Me?” and, finally, “Tetelestai!” (“It is finished!”). We must know and understand that it is on that cross that Jesus won our salvation and victory over death. Today, we need to know that if Jesus could work out the salvation of our souls and our eternal destiny, then He can probably help us out with our daily lives.
We just need to listen to Him.
